Creation Era
The Tower of Babel
Scattered nations and confused languages mark the beginning of the diversity of peoples across the earth.
- Genesis 10:26c. 2247 BC
Yoktan fathered Almodad, Shelef, Hatzar-Mavet, Yerach,
- Genesis 10:27c. 2247 BC
Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
- Genesis 10:28c. 2207 BC
‘Oval, Avima’el, Sheva,
- Genesis 10:29c. 2207 BC
Ofir, Havilah and Yovav — all these were the sons of Yoktan.
- Genesis 10:30c. 2207 BC
Their territory stretched from Mesha, as you go toward S’far, to the mountain in the east.
- Genesis 10:31c. 2207 BC
These were the descendants of Shem, according to their families and languages, in their lands and in their nations.
- Genesis 10:32c. 2207 BC
These were the families of the sons of Noach, according to their generations, in their nations. From these the nations of the earth were divided up after the flood.
- Genesis 11:1c. 2247 BC
The whole earth used the same language, the same words.
- Genesis 11:2c. 2247 BC
It came about that as they traveled from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shin‘ar and lived there.
- Genesis 11:3c. 2247 BC
They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them in the fire.” So they had bricks for building-stone and clay for mortar.
- Genesis 11:4c. 2247 BC
Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city with a tower that has its top reaching up into heaven, so that we can make a name for ourselves and not be scattered all over the earth.”
- Genesis 11:5c. 2247 BC
Adonai came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.
- Genesis 11:6c. 2247 BC
Adonai said, “Look, the people are united, they all have a single language, and see what they’re starting to do! At this rate, nothing they set out to accomplish will be impossible for them!
- Genesis 11:7c. 2247 BC
Come, let’s go down and confuse their language, so that they won’t understand each other’s speech.”
- Genesis 11:8c. 2247 BC
So from there Adonai scattered them all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.
- Genesis 11:9c. 2247 BC
For this reason it is called Bavel [confusion] — because there Adonai confused the language of the whole earth, and from there Adonai scattered them all over the earth.
- Genesis 11:10c. 2346 BC
Here is the genealogy of Shem. Shem was 100 years old when he fathered Arpakhshad two years after the flood.
- Genesis 11:11c. 1846 BC
After Arpakhshad was born, Shem lived another 500 years and had sons and daughters.
- Genesis 11:12c. 2311 BC
Arpakhshad lived thirty-five years and fathered Shelach.
- Genesis 11:13c. 1908 BC
After Shelach was born, Arpakhshad lived another 403 years and had sons and daughters.
- Genesis 11:14c. 2281 BC
Shelach lived thirty years and fathered ‘Ever.
- Genesis 11:15c. 1878 BC
After ‘Ever was born, Shelach lived another 403 years and had sons and daughters.
- Genesis 11:16c. 2247 BC
‘Ever lived thirty-four years and fathered Peleg.
- Genesis 11:17c. 1817 BC
After Peleg was born, ‘Ever lived another 430 years and had sons and daughters.
- Genesis 11:18c. 2217 BC
Peleg lived thirty years and fathered Re‘u.
