Bible Verses About Oath

For Herod had arrested Yochanan, put him in chains and thrown him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip;

since Yochanan had told Herod, "It violates the Torah for you to have her as your wife."

Herod had wanted to put Yochanan to death; but he was afraid of the people, in whose eyes Yochanan was a prophet.

However, at Herod's birthday celebration, Herodias' daughter danced before the company and pleased Herod

so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of Yochanan the Immerser."

The king became deeply upset; but out of regard for the oaths he had sworn before his dinner guests, he ordered that her wish be granted,

and sent and had Yochanan beheaded in prison.

The head was brought on a platter to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.

Yochanan's talmidim came, took the body and buried it; then they went and told Yeshua.

And you say, `If someone swears by the altar, he is not bound by his oath; but if he swears by the offering on the altar, he is bound.'

Blind men! Which is more important? the sacrifice? or the altar which makes the sacrifice holy

So someone who swears by the altar swears by it and everything on it.

And someone who swears by the Temple swears by it and the One who lives in it

And someone who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and the One who sits on it.

Yeshua remained silent. The cohen hagadol said to him, "I put you under oath! By the living God, tell us if you are the Mashiach, the Son of God!"

Herod was appalled; but out of regard for the oaths he had sworn before his dinner guests, he did not want to break his word to her.

The next day, some of the Judeans formed a conspiracy. They took an oath, saying they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Sha’ul;

more than forty were involved in this plot.
