  1. This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness.

  2. He created them male and female, and blessed them. On the day they were created, he named them “Adam”.

  3. The fear of you and the dread of you will be on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the sky. Everything that moves along the ground, and all the fish of the sea, are delivered into your hand.

  12. Remember, I beg you, that you have fashioned me as clay. Will you bring me into dust again?

  13. Haven’t you poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?

  14. You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.

  15. “Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.

  16. Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous? Or does it benefit him, that you make your ways perfect?

  17. Is it for your piety that he reproves you, that he enters with you into judgment?

  18. Isn’t your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities.

  19. How then can man be just with God? Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?

  20. Behold, even the moon has no brightness, and the stars are not pure in his sight;

  21. How much less man, who is a worm, the son of man, who is a worm!”

  22. “Do you think this to be your right, or do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s,’

  23. That you ask, ‘What advantage will it be to you? What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?’

  24. I will answer you, and your companions with you.

  25. Look to the heavens, and see. See the skies, which are higher than you.
