  1. Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,

  7. ¶ Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

  8. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

  9. ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

  10. Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

  11. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

  12. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  13. ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

  14. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

  15. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

  16. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

  17. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

  18. And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

  19. And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

  20. But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

  21. ¶ What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.

  22. For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

  23. Thus saith the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.

  24. And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile.

  25. ¶ He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.
