  1. This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,

  2. That the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.

  3. How often shall the lamp of the wicked be put out, and a deluge come upon them, and he shall distribute the sorrows of his wrath?

  4. They shall be as chaff before the face of the wind, and as ashes which the whirlwind scattereth.

  5. One man dieth strong, and hale, rich and happy.

  6. His bowels are full of fat, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

  7. But another dieth in bitterness of soul without any riches:

  8. And yet they shall sleep together in the dust, and worms shall cover them.

  9. The rich man when he shall sleep shall take away nothing with him: he shall open his eyes and find nothing.

  10. Poverty like water shall take hold on him, a tempest shall oppress him in the night:

  11. A burning wind shall take him up, and carry him away, and as a whirlwind shall snatch him from his place.

  12. And he shall cast upon him, and shall not spare: out of his hand he would willingly flee.

  13. He shall clasp his hands upon him, and shall hiss at him, beholding his place.

  14. A psalm for David, for a remembrance of the sabbath.

  15. Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation; nor chastise me in thy wrath.

  16. I am afflicted and humbled exceedingly: I roared with the groaning of my heart.

  17. Lord, all my desire is before thee, and my groaning is not hidden from thee.

  18. I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

  19. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

  20. I will not take calves out of thy house: nor he goats out of thy flocks.

  21. For all the beasts of the woods are mine: the cattle on the hills, and the oxen.

  22. Thy mouth hath abounded with evil, and thy tongue framed deceits.

  23. Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother's son:

  24. Lift up thy hands against their pride unto the end; see what things the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.

  25. And they that hate thee have made their boasts, in the midst of thy solemnity. They have set up their ensigns for signs,
