  1. And he said to him: (God forbid, thou shalt not die: for my father will do nothing, great or little, without first telling me: hath then my father hid this word only from me? no, this shall not be.

  2. And he swore again to David. And David said: Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, and he will say: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. But truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there is but one step (as I may say) between me and death.

  11. If its roots be old in the earth, and its stock be dead in the dust:

  12. At the scent of water, it shall spring, and bring forth leaves, as when it was first planted.

  13. But man when he shall be dead, and stripped and consumed, I pray you where is he?

  14. As if the waters should depart out of the sea, and an emptied river should be dried up;

  15. So man when he is fallen asleep shall not rise again; till the heavens be broken, he shall not awake, nor rise up out of his sleep.

  16. Waters wear away the stones, and with inundation the ground by little and little is washed away: so in like manner thou shalt destroy man.

  17. Thou hast strengthened him for a little while, that he may pass away for ever: thou shalt change his face, and shalt send him away.

  18. Whether his children come to honour or dishonour, he shall not understand.

  19. If I wait hell is my house, and I have made my bed in darkness.

  20. I have said to rottenness: Thou art my father; to worms, my mother and my sister.

  21. But another dieth in bitterness of soul without any riches:

  22. And yet they shall sleep together in the dust, and worms shall cover them.

  23. He shall be brought to the graves, and shall watch in the heap of the dead.

  24. He hath been acceptable to the gravel of Cocytus, and he shall draw every man after him, and there are innumerable before him.

  25. If he turn his heart to him, he shall draw his spirit and breath unto himself.
