  1. But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him.

  2. And the Lord said: Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like?

  3. They are like to children sitting in the marketplace and speaking one to another and saying: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have mourned, and you have not wept.

  4. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine. And you say: He hath a devil.

  5. The Son of man is come eating and drinking. And you say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners.

  8. But Jesus seeing the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and set him by him,

  9. And said to them: Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me. For he that is the lesser among you all, he is the greater.

  10. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

  11. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest: and not finding, he saith: I will return into my house whence I came out.

  12. And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished.

  13. Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself: and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.

  14. I am come to cast fire on the earth. And what will I, but that it be kindled?

  15. And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized. And how am I straitened until it be accomplished?

  16. Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation.

  17. For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three.

  18. The father shall be divided against the son and the son against his father: the mother against the daughter and the daughter against her mother: the mother-in-law against the daughter-in-law and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

  19. And he said to them: Go and tell that fox: Behold, I cast out devils and do cures, to-day and to-morrow, and the third day I am consummated.

  20. Nevertheless, I must walk to-day and to-morrow and the day following, because it cannot be that a prophet perish, out of Jerusalem.

  21. But he said to him: A certain man made a great supper and invited many.

  22. And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come: for now all things are ready.

  23. And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm and I must needs go out and see it. I pray thee, hold me excused.

  24. And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen and I go to try them. I pray thee, hold me excused.

  25. And another said: I have married a wife; and therefore I cannot come.
