  1. Till the arrow pierce his liver: as if a bird should make haste to the snare, and knoweth not that his life is in danger.

  4. To call them that pass by the way, and go on their journey:

  5. He that is a little one, let him turn to me. And to the fool she said:

  6. Stolen waters are sweeter, and hidden bread is more pleasant.

  7. And he did not know that giants are there, and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

  8. The mouth of a strange woman is a deep pit: he whom the Lord is angry with, shall fall into it.

  9. For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

  10. She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.

  11. A man that loveth wisdom, rejoiceth his father: but he that maintaineth harlots, shall squander away his substance.

  12. Three things are hard to me, and the fourth I am utterly ignorant of.

  13. There are three things, which go well, and the fourth that walketh happily:

  14. Such also is the way of an adulterous woman, who eateth and wipeth her mouth, and saith: I have done no evil.

  15. Give not thy substance to women, and thy riches to destroy kings.

  16. But draw near hither, you sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer, and of the harlot.

  17. Upon whom have you jested? upon whom have you opened your mouth wide, and put out your tongue? are not you wicked children, a false seed,

  18. It is commonly said: If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and marry another man, shall he return to her any more? shall not that woman be polluted, and defiled? but thou hast prostituted thyself to many lovers: nevertheless return to me, saith the Lord, and I will receive thee.

  19. How can I be merciful to thee? thy children have forsaken me, and swear by them that are not gods: I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery, and rioted in the harlot's house.

  20. They are become as amorous horses and stallions: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

  21. To steal, to murder, to commit adultery, to swear falsely, to offer to Baalim, and to go after strange gods, which you know not.

  22. And you have come, and stood before me in this house, in which my name is called upon, and have said: We are delivered, because we have done all these abominations.

  23. Because the land is full of adulterers, because the land hath mourned by reason of cursing, the fields of the desert are dried up: and their course is become evil, and their strength unlike.

  24. And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Juda, that are in Babylon, saying: The Lord make thee like Sedecias, and like Achab, whom the king of Babylon fried in the fire:

  25. Because they have acted folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with the wives of their friends, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I commanded them not: I am the judge and the witness, saith the Lord.
