  1. Till an arrow strike through his liver; As a bird hasteth to the snare, And knoweth not that it is for his life.

  2. The foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knoweth nothing.

  3. And she sitteth at the door of her house, On a seat in the high places of the city,

  4. To call to them that pass by, Who go right on their ways:

  5. Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither; And as for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him,

  6. Stolen waters are sweet, And breadeatenin secret is pleasant.

  7. But he knoweth not that the dead are there; That her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

  8. The mouth of strange women is a deep pit; He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.

  9. For a harlot is a deep ditch; And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.

  10. Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.

  11. Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; But he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth his substance.

  12. There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yea, four which I know not:

  13. The way of an eagle in the air; The way of a serpent upon a rock; The way of a ship in the midst of the sea; And the way of a man with a maiden.

  14. So is the way of an adulterous woman; She eateth, and wipeth her mouth, And saith, I have done no wickedness.

  15. Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

  16. But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the harlot.

  17. Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and put out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,

  18. They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, will he return unto her again? will not that land be greatly polluted? But thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith Jehovah.

  19. How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ houses;

  20. they were as fed horses roaming at large; every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

  21. Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods that ye have not known,

  22. and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered; that ye may do all these abominations?

  23. For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pastures of the wilderness are dried up. And their course is evil, and their might is not right;

  24. and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

  25. because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith Jehovah.
