  1. So Ya'akov sent for Rachel and Le'ah and had them come to the field where his flock was.

  2. He said to them, "I see by the way your father looks that he feels differently toward me than before; but the God of my father has been with me.

  3. You know that I have served your father with all my strength,

  4. and that your father has belittled me and has changed my wages ten times; but God did not allow him to do me any damage.

  5. Some P'rushim came and tried to trap him by asking, "Is it permitted for a man to divorce his wife on any ground whatever?"

  6. He replied, "Haven't you read that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female,

  7. and that he said, `For this reason a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two are to become one flesh'?

  8. Thus they are no longer two, but one. So then, no one should split apart what God has joined together."

  9. They said to him, "Then why did Moshe give the commandment that a man should hand his wife a get and divorce her?"

  10. He answered, "Moshe allowed you to divorce your wives because your hearts are so hardened. But this is not how it was at the beginning.

  11. Now what I say to you is that whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery!"

  12. However, at the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

  13. For this reason, a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife,

  14. and the two are to become one flesh. Thus they are no longer two, but one.

  15. Well, because of the danger of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

  16. The husband should give his wife what she is entitled to in the marriage relationship, and the wife should do the same for her husband.

  17. The wife is not in charge of her own body, but her husband is; likewise, the husband is not in charge of his own body, but his wife is.

  18. As for husbands, love your wives, just as the Messiah loved the Messianic Community, indeed, gave himself up on its behalf,

  19. in order to set it apart for God, making it clean through immersion in the mikveh, so to speak,

  20. in order to present the Messianic Community to himself as a bride to be proud of, without a spot, wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and without defect.

  21. This is how husbands ought to love their wives — like their own bodies; for the man who loves his wife is loving himself.

  22. Why, no one ever hated his own flesh! On the contrary, he feeds it well and takes care of it, just as the Messiah does the Messianic Community,

  23. because we are parts of his Body.

  24. “Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and remain with his wife, and the two will become one.”

  25. There is profound truth hidden here, which I say concerns the Messiah and the Messianic Community.
