  1. Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field to his flock,

  2. and said to them, “I see the expression on your father’s face, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me.

  3. You know that I have served your father with all of my strength.

  4. Your father has deceived me, and changed my wages ten times, but God didn’t allow him to hurt me.

  5. Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?”

  6. He answered, “Haven’t you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female,

  7. and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?’

  8. So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart.”

  9. They asked him, “Why then did Moses command us to give her a bill of divorce, and divorce her?”

  10. He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so.

  11. I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is divorced commits adultery.”

  12. But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.

  13. For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife,

  14. and the two will become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.

  15. But, because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.

  16. Let the husband render to his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.

  17. The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife.

  18. Husbands, love your wives, even as Messiah also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it;

  19. that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word,

  20. that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without defect.

  21. Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.

  22. For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly;

  23. because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones.

  24. “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh.”

  25. This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Messiah and of the assembly.
