  1. until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”

  2. So they answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go.

  3. Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. And may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses.

  4. Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words, all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!”

  5. This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Reuben:

  6. The territory from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau beyond Medeba,

  7. to Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,

  8. Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

  9. Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,

  10. Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth—

  11. all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon until Moses killed him and the chiefs of Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.

  12. The Israelites also killed the diviner Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the sword.

  13. And the border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.

  14. The Levites, however, have no portion among you, because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. And Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received the inheritance that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them beyond the Jordan to the east.”

  15. Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

  16. and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.

  17. All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.

  18. And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.

  19. But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

  20. So Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way, and they went to their homes.

  21. And when they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

  22. Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side.”

  23. And when they heard this, the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh to go to war against them.

  24. The Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest to the land of Gilead, to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

  25. With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
