  1. So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”

  2. Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

  3. So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his army with the sword.

  4. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as a reminder and recite it to Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”

  5. So Moses set out with Joshua his attendant and went up on the mountain of God.

  6. When Joshua heard the sound of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “The sound of war is in the camp.”

  7. Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave the tent.

  8. Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”

  9. from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;

  10. These were the names of the men Moses sent to spy out the land; and Moses gave to Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.

  11. Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes

  12. Surely none of you will enter the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

  13. Of those men who had gone to spy out the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive.

  14. For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

  15. And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man with the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.

  16. Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation,

  17. not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun—because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’

  18. So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the family leaders of the tribes of Israel.

  19. “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.

  20. Joshua son of Nun, who stands before you, will enter it. Encourage him, for he will enable Israel to inherit the land.

  21. And at that time I commanded Joshua: “Your own eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter.

  22. But commission Joshua, encourage him, and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of the people and enable them to inherit the land that you will see.”

  23. The LORD your God Himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will dispossess them. Joshua will cross ahead of you, as the LORD has said.

  24. Then Moses called for Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land that the LORD swore to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.

  25. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death is near. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting.
