  1. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, And gave gifts unto men.

  2. from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.

  3. if so be that ye heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:

  4. that ye put away, as concerning your former manner of life, the old man, that waxeth corrupt after the lusts of deceit;

  5. and that ye be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

  6. and put on the new man, that after God hath been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

  7. Wherefore he saith, Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine upon thee.

  8. being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ:

  9. in whom ye were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ;

  10. having been buried with him in baptism, wherein ye were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

  11. And you, being dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, you, I say, did he make alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses;

  12. lie not one to another; seeing that ye have put off the old man with his doings,

  13. and have put on the new man, that is being renewed unto knowledge after the image of him that created him:

  14. But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, for that God chose you from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

  15. not by works done in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

  16. which he poured out upon us richly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

  17. Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.

  18. For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard.

  19. For we who have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said, As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

  20. For he hath said somewhere of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works;

  21. and in this place again, They shall not enter into my rest.

  22. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some should enter thereinto, and they to whom the good tidings were before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience,

  23. he again defineth a certain day, To-day, saying in David so long a time afterward (even as hath been said before), To-day if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts.

  24. For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.

  25. There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God.
