  1. wherefore, he saith, `Having gone up on high he led captive captivity, and gave gifts to men,' --

  2. from whom the whole body, being fitly joined together and united, through the supply of every joint, according to the working in the measure of each single part, the increase of the body doth make for the building up of itself in love.

  3. if so be ye did hear him, and in him were taught, as truth is in Jesus;

  4. ye are to put off concerning the former behaviour the old man, that is corrupt according to the desires of the deceit,

  5. and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

  6. and to put on the new man, which, according to God, was created in righteousness and kindness of the truth.

  7. wherefore he saith, `Arouse thyself, thou who art sleeping, and arise out of the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.'

  8. having been confident of this very thing, that He who did begin in you a good work, will perform it till a day of Jesus Christ,

  9. in whom also ye were circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh in the circumcision of the Christ,

  10. being buried with him in the baptism, in which also ye rose with him through the faith of the working of God, who did raise him out of the dead.

  11. And you--being dead in the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh--He made alive together with him, having forgiven you all the trespasses,

  12. Lie not one to another, having put off the old man with his practices,

  13. and having put on the new, which is renewed in regard to knowledge, after the image of Him who did create him;

  14. And we--we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved by the Lord, that God did choose you from the beginning to salvation, in sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth,

  15. (not by works that are in righteousness that we did but according to His kindness,) He did save us, through a bathing of regeneration, and a renewing of the Holy Spirit,

  16. which He poured upon us richly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour,

  17. We may fear, then, lest a promise being left of entering into His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short,

  18. for we also are having good news proclaimed, even as they, but the word heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard,

  19. for we do enter into the rest--we who did believe, as He said, `So I sware in My anger, If they shall enter into My rest--;' and yet the works were done from the foundation of the world,

  20. for He spake in a certain place concerning the seventh day thus: `And God did rest in the seventh day from all His works;'

  21. and in this place again, `If they shall enter into My rest--;'

  22. since then, it remaineth for certain to enter into it, and those who did first hear good news entered not in because of unbelief--

  23. again He doth limit a certain day, `To-day,' (in David saying, after so long a time,) as it hath been said, `To-day, if His voice ye may hear, ye may not harden your hearts,'

  24. for if Joshua had given them rest, He would not concerning another day have spoken after these things;

  25. there doth remain, then, a sabbatic rest to the people of God,
