¶ And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half was the length of it, and a cubit and a half the breadth of it, and a cubit and a half the height of it:
And he cast for it four rings of gold, to be set by the four corners of it; even two rings upon the one side of it, and two rings upon the other side of it.
One cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof.
And the cherubims spread out their wings on high, and covered with their wings over the mercy seat, with their faces one to another; even to the mercy seatward were the faces of the cherubims.
¶ And he made the table of shittim wood: two cubits was the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof:
And he made the candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work made he the candlestick; his shaft, and his branch, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, were of the same:
And six branches going out of the sides thereof; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side thereof, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side thereof:
Three bowls made after the fashion of almonds in one branch, a knop and a flower; and three bowls made like almonds in another branch, a knop and a flower: so throughout the six branches going out of the candlestick.
And a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches going out of it.
¶ And he made the incense altar of shittim wood: the length of it was a cubit, and the breadth of it a cubit; it was foursquare; and two cubits was the height of it; the horns thereof were of the same.
And he overlaid it with pure gold, both the top of it, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns of it: also he made unto it a crown of gold round about.
And he made two rings of gold for it under the crown thereof, by the two corners of it, upon the two sides thereof, to be places for the staves to bear it withal.
And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, according to the work of the apothecary.

Study Notes for Exodus 37
Verse 1
Bezaleel made the ark — In the instructions ‘they’ make the ark (Ex 25:10); here one named craftsman does. The LORD had ‘called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri’, of Judah, and ‘filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship’ (Ex 31:2–3).
Verse 6
the mercy seat — Kapporeth, from kaphar, the verb of covering for sin, is the golden lid of the ark, used only of it. There the LORD said, ‘I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat’ (Ex 25:22); the high priest sprinkled blood on it (Lev 16:15). Rom 3:25 uses the same Greek word, ‘propitiation’.
Verse 10
the table of shittim wood — The measures are those of Ex 25:23. It is the table for the bread set ‘before me alway’ (Ex 25:30): ‘twelve cakes’ laid ‘in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD’ (Lev 24:5–6). Heb 9:2 lists ‘the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread’ in the first tabernacle.
Verse 16
his dishes, and his spoons, and his bowls, and his covers — These stood on the table; Num 4:7 lists the same four with ‘the continual bread’. ‘Spoons’ is kaph, the palm of the hand, a hollow dish: Num 7:14 uses it of ‘One spoon of ten shekels of gold, full of incense’.
Verse 17
of beaten work — Miqshah means hammered out of one piece, ‘of a talent of pure gold’ (Ex 25:31, 39). Its ‘knops’ and ‘flowers’ are made ‘after the fashion of almonds’ (v.19) on six branches. Zechariah sees ‘a candlestick all of gold’ with ‘seven lamps’ (Zech 4:2); ‘the seven candlesticks … are the seven churches’ (Rev 1:20).
Verse 23
his seven lamps… snuffdishes — The lamps are to burn ‘continually’ (Lev 24:2) and Aaron ‘dresseth the lamps’ every morning (Ex 30:7). ‘Snuffdishes’ is machtah, a pan for live coals, which the KJV renders ‘censer’ in Lev 10:1 and Lev 16:12; the snuffers are the tongs that trimmed the wicks.
Verse 25
the incense altar — Its place was ‘before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony’ (Ex 30:6); Aaron burned sweet incense on it every morning (Ex 30:7). Incense stands for prayer: ‘Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense’ (Ps 141:2); Zacharias’s lot was ‘to burn incense’ while the people prayed outside (Luke 1:9–10).
Verse 29
according to the work of the apothecary — The apothecary (roqeach) compounds perfume. The oil is ‘an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary’ (Ex 30:25), kept to its purpose: ‘Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it’ (Ex 30:32). The same rule governs the incense (Ex 30:37).
