  1. Now Adonai said to Avram, “Get yourself out of your country, away from your kinsmen and away from your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

  2. I will make of you a great nation, I will bless you, and I will make your name great; and you are to be a blessing.

  3. I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

  4. ADONAI said to Avram, after Lot had moved away from him, "Look all around you from where you are, to the north, the south, the east and the west.

  5. All the land you see I will give to you and your descendants forever,

  6. and I will make your descendants as numerous as the specks of dust on the earth - so that if a person can count the specks of dust on the earth, then your descendants can be counted.

  7. Get up and walk through the length and breadth of the land, because I will give it to you."

  8. ADONAI appeared to him and said, "Don't go down into Egypt, but live where I tell you.

  9. Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you, because I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants. I will fulfill the oath which I swore to Avraham your father -

  10. I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, I will give all these lands to your descendants, and by your descendants all the nations of the earth will bless themselves.

  11. All this is because Avraham heeded what I said and did what I told him to do -he followed my mitzvot, my regulations and my teachings."

  12. He dreamt that there before him was a ladder resting on the ground with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of ADONAI were going up and down on it.

  13. Then suddenly ADONAI was standing there next to him; and he said, "I am ADONAI, the God of Avraham your [grand]father and the God of Yitz'chak. The land on which you are lying I will give to you and to your descendants.

  14. Your descendants will be as numerous as the grains of dust on the earth. You will expand to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. By you and your descendants all the families of the earth will be blessed.

  15. Look, I am with you. I will guard you wherever you go, and I will bring you back into this land, because I won't leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

  16. After Ya'akov arrived from Paddan-Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.

  17. God said to him, "Your name is Ya'akov, but you will be called Ya'akov no longer; your name will be Isra'el."Thus he named him Isra'el.

  18. God further said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed a group of nations, will come from you; kings will be descended from you.

  19. Moreover, the land which I gave to Avraham and Yitz'chak I will give to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you."

  20. 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.

  21. Now if you will pay careful attention to what I say and keep my covenant, then you will be my own treasure from among all the peoples, for all the earth is mine;

  22. and you will be a kingdom of cohanim for me, a nation set apart.'These are the words you are to speak to the people of Isra'el."

  23. Moshe took half of the blood and put it in basins; the other half of the blood he splashed against the altar.

  24. Then he took the book of the covenant and read it aloud, so that the people could hear; and they responded, "Everything that ADONAI has spoken, we will do and obey."

  25. Moshe took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which ADONAI has made with you in accordance with all these words."
