  1. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.

  2. “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,

  3. Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him.

  4. I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

  5. For the One whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.

  6. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands.

  7. He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

  8. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—

  9. the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.

  10. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

  11. When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father—He will testify about Me.

  12. But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

  13. However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

  14. He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.

  15. Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.

  16. When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

  17. until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.

  18. And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.

  19. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

  20. Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

  21. He has sent this message to the people of Israel, proclaiming the gospel of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

  22. You yourselves know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee with the baptism that John proclaimed:

  23. how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.

  24. regarding His Son, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh,

  25. and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
