  1. Behold I will stir up the Medes against them, who shall not seek silver, nor desire gold:

  2. The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds come from the south, it cometh from the desert from a terrible land.

  3. A grievous vision is told me: he that is unfaithful dealeth unfaithfully: and he that is a spoiler, spoileth. Go up, O Elam, besiege, O Mede: I have made all the mourning thereof to cease.

  4. Therefore are my loins filled with pain, anguish hath taken hold of me, as the anguish of a woman in labour: I fell down at the hearing of it, I was troubled at the seeing of it.

  5. My heart failed, darkness amazed me: Babylon my beloved is become a wonder to me.

  6. Prepare the table, behold in the watchtower them that eat and drink: arise, ye princes, take up the shield.

  7. For thus hath the Lord said to me: Go, and set a watchman: and whatsoever he shall see, let him tell.

  8. And he saw a chariot with two horsemen, a rider upon an ass, and a rider upon a camel: and he beheld them diligently with much heed.

  9. And a lion cried out: I am upon the watchtower of the Lord, standing continually by day: and I am upon my ward, standing whole nights.

  10. Behold this man cometh, the rider upon the chariot with two horsemen, and he answered, and said: Babylon is fallen, she is fallen, and all the graven gods thereof are broken unto the ground.

  11. O my thrashing, and the children of my floor, that which I have heard of the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, I have declared unto you.

  12. The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Sedecias king of Juda, saying:

  13. Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Behold I will break the bow of Elam, and their chief strength.

  14. And I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven: and I will scatter them into all these winds: and there shall be no nation, to which the fugitives of Elam shall not come.

  15. And I will cause Elam to be afraid before their enemies, and in the sight of them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, my fierce wrath, saith the Lord: and I will send the sword after them, till I consume them.

  16. And I will set my throne in Elam, and destroy kings and princes from thence, saith the Lord.

  17. But in the latter days I will cause the captives of Elam, to return, saith the Lord.

  18. Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers, the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: and his mind is against Babylon to destroy it, because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple.

  19. Upon the walls of Babylon set up the standard, strengthen the watch: set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the Lord hath both purposed, and done all that he spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon.

  20. O thou that dwellest upon many waters, rich in treasures, thy end is come for thy entire destruction.

  21. The Lord of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying: I will fill thee with men as with locusts, and they shall lift up a joyful shout against thee.

  22. He that made the earth by his power, that hath prepared the world by his wisdom, and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

  23. When he uttereth his voice the waters are multiplied in heaven: he lifteth up the clouds from the ends of the earth, he hath turned lightning into rain: and hath brought forth the wind out of his treasures.

  24. Every man is become foolish by his knowledge: every founder is confounded by his idol, for what he hath cast is a lie, and there is no breath in them.

  25. They are vain works, and worthy to be laughed at, in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
