  1. Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, who shall not regard silver, and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

  2. The burden of the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds in the South sweep through, it cometh from the wilderness, from a terrible land.

  3. A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous man dealeth treacherously, and the destroyer destroyeth. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.

  4. Therefore are my loins filled with anguish; pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail: I am pained so that I cannot hear; I am dismayed so that I cannot see.

  5. My heart fluttereth, horror hath affrighted me; the twilight that I desired hath been turned into trembling unto me.

  6. They prepare the table, they set the watch, they eat, they drink: rise up, ye princes, anoint the shield.

  7. For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman; let him declare what he seeth:

  8. and when he seeth a troop, horsemen in pairs, a troop of asses, a troop of camels, he shall hearken diligently with much heed.

  9. And he cried as a lion: O Lord, I stand continually upon the watch-tower in the day-time, and am set in my ward whole nights;

  10. and, behold, here cometh a troop of men, horsemen in pairs. And he answered and said, Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the graven images of her gods are broken unto the ground.

  11. O thou my threshing, and the grain of my floor! that which I have heard from Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

  12. The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

  13. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

  14. And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

  15. And I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life; and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith Jehovah; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:

  16. and I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence king and princes, saith Jehovah.

  17. But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring back the captivity of Elam, saith Jehovah.

  18. Make sharp the arrows; hold firm the shields: Jehovah hath stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes; because his purpose is against Babylon, to destroy it: for it is the vengeance of Jehovah, the vengeance of his temple.

  19. Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set the watchmen, prepare the ambushes; for Jehovah hath both purposed and done that which he spake concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.

  20. O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, the measure of thy covetousness.

  21. Jehovah of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with the canker-worm; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.

  22. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens.

  23. When he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.

  24. Every man is become brutish and is without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

  25. They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
