  1. Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes, who have no regard for silver and no desire for gold.

  2. This is the burden against the Desert by the Sea: Like whirlwinds sweeping through the Negev, an invader comes from the desert, from a land of terror.

  4. Therefore my body is filled with anguish. Pain grips me, like the pains of a woman in labor. I am bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.

  5. My heart falters; fear makes me tremble. The twilight of my desire has turned to horror.

  6. They prepare a table, they lay out a carpet, they eat, they drink! Rise up, O princes, oil the shields!

  7. For this is what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees.

  8. When he sees chariots with teams of horsemen, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, he must be alert, fully alert.”

  9. Then the lookout shouted: “Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower; night after night I stay at my post.

  10. Look, here come the riders, horsemen in pairs.” And one answered, saying: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon! All the images of her gods lie shattered on the ground!”

  11. O my people, crushed on the threshing floor, I tell you what I have heard from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel.

  12. This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah.

  13. This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold, I will shatter Elam’s bow, the mainstay of their might.

  14. I will bring the four winds against Elam from the four corners of the heavens, and I will scatter them to all these winds. There will not be a nation to which Elam’s exiles will not go.

  15. So I will shatter Elam before their foes, before those who seek their lives. I will bring disaster upon them, even My fierce anger,” declares the LORD. “I will send out the sword after them until I finish them off.

  16. I will set My throne in Elam, and destroy its king and officials,” declares the LORD.

  17. “Yet in the last days, I will restore Elam from captivity,” declares the LORD.

  18. Sharpen the arrows! Fill the quivers! The LORD has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because His plan is aimed at Babylon to destroy her, for it is the vengeance of the LORD— vengeance for His temple.

  19. Raise a banner against the walls of Babylon; post the guard; station the watchmen; prepare the ambush. For the LORD has both devised and accomplished what He spoke against the people of Babylon.

  20. You who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come; the thread of your life is cut.

  21. The LORD of Hosts has sworn by Himself: “Surely I will fill you up with men as with locusts, and they will shout in triumph over you.”

  22. The LORD made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.

  23. When He thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the lightning with the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.

  24. Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols. For his molten images are a fraud, and there is no breath in them.

  25. They are worthless, a work to be mocked. In the time of their punishment they will perish.
