  1. As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”

  2. But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!

  3. Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.

  4. Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”

  5. “Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.

  6. Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.

  7. And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.

  8. Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens.

  9. Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.

  10. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

  11. Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.

  12. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.

  13. So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived.

  14. No daughter or son of Israel is to be a shrine prostitute.

  15. All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.

  16. But their vine is from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poisonous; their clusters are bitter.

  17. Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah!

  18. The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster upon themselves.

  19. And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

  20. And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: They commit adultery and walk in lies. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns his back on wickedness. They are all like Sodom to Me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”

  21. As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,” says the LORD, “no one will dwell there; no man will abide there.

  23. The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in an instant without a hand turned to help her.

  24. Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters to your north; and your younger sister was Sodom, who lived with her daughters to your south.

  25. And you not only walked in their ways and practiced their abominations, but soon you were more depraved than they were.
