  1. For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the LORD.

  8. Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you, but you have persuaded this people to trust in a lie.

  9. Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.’”

  10. And in the seventh month of that very year, the prophet Hananiah died.

  11. Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, saying: ‘Do not do this detestable thing that I hate.’

  12. But they did not listen or incline their ears; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods.

  13. Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so that they have become the desolate ruin they are today.

  14. I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath.

  15. He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light.

  16. Indeed, He keeps turning His hand against me all day long.

  17. He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones.

  18. He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

  19. He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages.

  20. He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains.

  21. Even when I cry out and plead for help, He shuts out my prayer.

  22. He has barred my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked.

  23. He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in ambush.

  24. He forced me off my path and tore me to pieces; He left me without help.

  25. He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow.
