  1. And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him.

  2. When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.

  3. He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

  4. “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’

  5. So give the order that the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people He has risen from the dead. And this last deception would be worse than the first.”

  6. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat on it.

  7. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

  8. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay.

  9. Then go quickly and tell His disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ See, I have told you.”

  10. So they hurried away from the tomb in fear and great joy, and ran to tell His disciples.

  11. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” They came to Him, grasped His feet, and worshiped Him.

  12. “Do not be afraid,” said Jesus. “Go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see Me.”

  13. and instructed them: “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’

  14. Meanwhile, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain Jesus had designated.

  15. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted.

  16. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

  17. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

  18. and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

  19. This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  20. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.”

  21. “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’”

  22. And he began to proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

  23. I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

  24. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

  25. As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
