  1. They that builded the wall and they that bare burdens laded themselves; every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other held his weapon;

  2. and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

  3. And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another:

  4. in what place soever ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us; our God will fight for us.

  5. So we wrought in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

  6. Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.

  7. For they provoked him to anger with their high places, And moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

  8. When God heardthis, he was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel;

  9. So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent which he placed among men;

  10. And delivered his strength into captivity, And his glory into the adversary’s hand.

  11. He gave his people over also unto the sword, And was wroth with his inheritance.

  12. Fire devoured their young men; And their virgins had no marriage-song.

  13. Their priests fell by the sword; And their widows made no lamentation.

  14. O God, the nations are come into thine inheritance; Thy holy temple have they defiled; They have laid Jerusalem in heaps.

  15. The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be food unto the birds of the heavens, The flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.

  16. Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; And there was none to bury them.

  17. We are become a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and derision to them that are round about us.

  18. How long, O Jehovah? wilt thou be angry for ever? Shall thy jealousy burn like fire?

  19. Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, And upon the kingdoms that call not upon thy name.

  20. For they have devoured Jacob, And laid waste his habitation.

  21. And they went about from nation to nation, From one kingdom to another people.

  22. He suffered no man to do them wrong; Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

  23. Saying, Touch not mine anointed ones, And do my prophets no harm.

  24. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber.

  25. Behold, he that keepeth Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep.
