  1. But to the wicked God says, “What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,

  2. since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?

  3. because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of the LORD.

  4. They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

  5. Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command will be rewarded.

  6. Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have rejected the law of the LORD of Hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

  7. Whom will he teach knowledge? To whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?

  8. For it is precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little.

  9. But he will speak to this nation with stammering lips and in another language;

  10. to whom he said, “This is the resting place. Give rest to weary”; and “This is the refreshing”; yet they would not hear.

  11. Therefore the LORD’s word will be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, fall backward, be broken, be snared, and be taken.

  12. Therefore hear the LORD’s word, you scoffers, that rule this people in Jerusalem:

  13. For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children who will not hear the LORD’s law;

  14. who tell the seers, “Don’t see!” and to the prophets, “Don’t prophesy to us right things. Tell us pleasant things. Prophesy deceits.

  15. Get out of the way. Turn aside from the path. Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.”

  16. Who has believed our message? To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

  17. To whom shall I speak and testify, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they can’t listen. Behold, the LORD’s word has become a reproach to them. They have no delight in it.

  18. The wise men are disappointed. They are dismayed and trapped. Behold, they have rejected the LORD’s word. What kind of wisdom is in them?

  19. I wrote for him the many things of my law; but they were regarded as a strange thing.

  20. “But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘Don’t prophesy!’

  21. “Don’t prophesy!” They prophesy. “Don’t prophesy about these things. Disgrace won’t overtake us.”

  22. “He said to him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one rises from the dead.’”

  23. He said to them, “Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

  24. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.

  25. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.
