  1. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what doth it profit us if we pray to him?

  2. And thou sayst: What doth God know? and he judgeth as it were through a mist.

  3. The clouds are his covert, and he doth not consider our things, and he walketh about the poles of heaven.

  4. Can he be healed that loveth not judgment? and how dost thou so far condemn him that is just?

  8. Consider, and hear me, O Lord, my God. Enlighten my eyes, that I never sleep in death:

  10. Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

  11. Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

  12. Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

  13. For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

  14. To day if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts:

  15. As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.

  16. These have seen the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

  17. He said the word, and there arose a storm of wind: and the waves thereof were lifted up.

  18. Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?

  19. Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off ? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our armies?

  20. Woe to you that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as the rope of a cart.

  21. That say: Let him make haste, and let his work come quickly, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel come, that we may know it.

  22. Therefore as the tongue of the fire devoureth the stubble, and the heat of the flame consumeth it: so shall their root be as ashes, and their bud shall go up as dust: for they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and have blasphemed the word of the Holy One of Israel.

  23. Therefore is the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched out his hand upon them, and struck them: and the mountains were troubles, and their carcasses became as dung in the midst of the streets. For after this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

  24. Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand the hearing? them that are weaned from the milk, that are drawn away from the breasts.

  25. For command, command again; command, command again; expect, expect again; a little there, a little there.
