  1. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, and what would we gain if we pray to Him?’

  6. who is not partial to princes and does not favor rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands.

  7. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue.

  8. They say, “With our tongues we will prevail. We own our lips—who can be our master?”

  9. They spoke against God, saying, “Can God really prepare a table in the wilderness?

  10. When He struck the rock, water gushed out and torrents raged. But can He also give bread or supply His people with meat?”

  11. Therefore the LORD heard and was filled with wrath; so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and His anger flared against Israel,

  12. because they did not believe God or rely on His salvation.

  13. They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob pays no heed.”

  14. Take notice, O senseless among the people! O fools, when will you be wise?

  15. He who affixed the ear, can He not hear? He who formed the eye, can He not see?

  16. They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His promise.

  17. They grumbled in their tents and did not listen to the voice of the LORD.

  18. because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.

  19. He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.

  20. Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of deceit and pull sin along with cart ropes,

  21. to those who say, “Let Him hurry and hasten His work so that we may see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come so that we may know it!”

  22. Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will decay and their blossoms will blow away like dust; for they have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

  23. Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains quake, and the corpses lay like refuse in the streets. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.

  24. Whom is He trying to teach? To whom is He explaining His message? To infants just weaned from milk? To babies removed from the breast?

  25. For they hear: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there.”
