  1. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’

  7. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts,

  8. who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?”

  9. Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

  10. Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide flesh for his people?”

  11. Therefore the LORD heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Israel,

  12. because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation <n>[yeshuat]</n>.

  13. They say, “The LORD will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider.”

  14. Consider, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you be wise?

  15. He who implanted the ear, won’t he hear? He who formed the eye, won’t he see?

  16. Yes, they despised the pleasant land. They didn’t believe his word,

  17. but murmured in their tents, and didn’t listen to the LORD’s voice.

  18. because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High.

  19. Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was no one to help.

  20. Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and wickedness as with cart rope;

  21. Who say, “Let him make speed, let him hasten his work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come, that we may know it!”

  22. Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have rejected the law of the LORD of Hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

  23. Therefore the LORD’s anger burns against his people, and he has stretched out his hand against them, and has struck them. The mountains tremble, and their dead bodies are as refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is still stretched out.

  24. Whom will he teach knowledge? To whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?

  25. For it is precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little.
