  1. The king became deeply upset; but out of regard for the oaths he had sworn before his dinner guests, he ordered that her wish be granted,

  2. "Woe to you, you blind guides! You say, `If someone swears by the Temple, he is not bound by his oath; but if he swears by the gold in the Temple, he is bound.'

  3. You blind fools! Which is more important? the gold? or the Temple which makes the gold holy?

  4. And you say, `If someone swears by the altar, he is not bound by his oath; but if he swears by the offering on the altar, he is bound.'

  5. Blind men! Which is more important? the sacrifice? or the altar which makes the sacrifice holy

  6. So someone who swears by the altar swears by it and everything on it.

  7. And someone who swears by the Temple swears by it and the One who lives in it

  8. And someone who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and the One who sits on it.

  9. Yeshua remained silent. The cohen hagadol said to him, "I put you under oath! By the living God, tell us if you are the Mashiach, the Son of God!"

  10. Again he denied it, swearing, "I don't know the man!"

  11. But don’t let yourself be talked into it, because more than forty men are lying in wait for him. They have taken an oath neither to eat nor to drink until they kill him; and they are ready now, only waiting for you to give your consent to their request.”

  12. I call God to witness — he knows what my life is like — that the reason I held back from coming to Corinth was out of consideration for you!

  14. For, as you know, never did we employ flattering talk, nor did we put on a false front to mask greed — God is witness.

  15. I charge you in the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.

  16. Now people swear oaths by someone greater than themselves, and confirmation by an oath puts an end to all dispute.

  17. Above all, brothers, stop swearing oaths — not “By heaven,” not “By the earth,” and not by any other formula; rather, let your “Yes” be simply “Yes” and your “No” simply “No,” so that you won’t fall under condemnation.

  18. Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted his right hand toward heaven
