  1. So someone who swears by the altar swears by it and everything on it.

  3. And someone who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and the One who sits on it.

  4. "Woe to you hypocritical Torah-teachers and P'rushim! You pay your tithes of mint, dill and cumin; but you have neglected the weightier matters of the Torah -- justice, mercy, trust. These are the things you should have attended to -- without neglecting the others!

  9. Likewise, you appear to people from the outside to be good and honest, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and far from Torah.

  10. "Woe to you hypocritical Torah-teachers and P'rushim! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the tzaddikim,

  11. and you say, `Had we lived when our fathers did, we would never have taken part in killing the prophets.'

  12. In this you testify against yourselves that you are worthy descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

  13. Go ahead then, finish what your fathers started!

  14. "You snakes! Sons of snakes! How can you escape being condemned to Gei Hinnom?

  15. then his master will come on a day the servant does not expect, at a time he doesn't know;

  16. and he will cut him in two and put him with the hypocrites, where people will wail and grind their teeth!

  17. "Then he will also speak to those on his left, saying, `Get away from me, you who are cursed! Go off into the fire prepared for the Adversary and his angels!

  18. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,

  19. a stranger and you did not welcome me, needing clothes and you did not give them to me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'

  20. Then they too will reply, `Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, a stranger, needing clothes, sick or in prison, and not take care of you?'

  21. And he will answer them, `Yes! I tell you that whenever you refused to do it for the least important of these people, you refused to do it for me!'

  22. Their worship of me is useless, because they teach man-made rules as if they were doctrines.'

  23. "You depart from God's command and hold onto human tradition. Indeed,"

  24. As he taught them, he said, "Watch out for the kind of Torah-teachers who like to walk around in robes and be greeted deferentially in the marketplaces,

  25. who like to have the best seats in the synagogues and take the places of honor at banquets,
