  1. Don’t deceive yourselves by only hearing what the Word says, but do it!

  2. For whoever hears the Word but doesn’t do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror,

  3. who looks at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

  4. What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but has no actions to prove it? Is such “faith” able to save him?

  5. Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food,

  6. and someone says to him, “Shalom! Keep warm and eat hearty!” without giving him what he needs, what good does it do?

  7. Thus, faith by itself, unaccompanied by actions, is dead.

  8. But someone will say that you have faith and I have actions. Show me this faith of yours without the actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions!

  9. You believe that “God is one”? Good for you! The demons believe it too — the thought makes them shudder with fear!

  10. But, foolish fellow, do you want to be shown that such “faith” apart from actions is barren?

  11. Wasn’t Avraham avinu declared righteous because of actions when he offered up his son Yitz’chak on the altar?

  12. You see that his faith worked with his actions; by the actions the faith was made complete;

  13. and the passage of the Tanakh was fulfilled which says, “Avraham had faith in God, and it was credited to his account as righteousness.” He was even called God’s friend.

  14. You see that a person is declared righteous because of actions and not because of faith alone.

  15. Likewise, wasn’t Rachav the prostitute also declared righteous because of actions when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another route?

  16. Indeed, just as the body without a spirit is dead, so too faith without actions is dead.

  17. But among the people there were also false prophets, just as there will be false teachers among you. Under false pretenses they will introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, and thus bring on themselves swift destruction.

  18. Many will follow their debaucheries; and because of them, the true Way will be maligned.

  19. In their greed they will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their punishment, decreed long ago, is not idle; their destruction is not asleep!

  20. These men are filthy spots at your festive gatherings meant to foster love; they share your meals without a qualm, while caring only for themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by the winds; trees without fruit even in autumn, and doubly dead because they have been uprooted;

  21. savage sea-waves heaving forth their shameful deeds like foam; wandering stars for whom the blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
