  1. Among those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.

  2. And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

  3. Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few leading women.

  4. As a result, many of them believed, along with quite a few prominent Greek women and men.

  5. But some joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others who were with them.

  6. For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.

  7. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

  8. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.

  9. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is just as if her head were shaved.

  10. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.

  11. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.

  12. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.

  13. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

  14. For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.

  15. In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.

  16. For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.

  17. Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

  18. Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,

  19. but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.

  20. Women are to be silent in the churches. They are not permitted to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

  21. If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.

  22. I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.

  23. Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,

  24. but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.

  25. A woman must learn in quietness and full submissiveness.
