  1. By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

  2. These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

  3. ¶ And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

  4. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

  5. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

  6. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

  7. ¶ And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

  8. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

  9. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

  10. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

  11. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

  12. ¶ The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

  13. ¶ In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

  14. ¶ He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

  15. ¶ Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

  16. ¶ Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

  17. A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

  18. For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

  19. ¶ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

  20. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

  21. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

  22. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  23. ¶ And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

  24. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

  25. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
