  1. ¶ The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.

  2. In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

  3. ¶ Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

  4. For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.

  5. I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

  6. Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.

  7. Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

  8. ¶ And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

  9. He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

  10. Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.

  11. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

  12. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

  13. But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

  14. Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

  15. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

  16. They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

  17. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

  18. Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.

  19. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.

  20. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

  21. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

  22. But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

  23. Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.

  24. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

  25. And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
