  1. So the postes went with letters by the commission of the King, and his princes, thorowout all Israel and Iudah, and with the commandement of the King, saying, Ye children of Israel, turne againe vnto the Lord God of Abraham, Izhak, and Israel, and he will returne to the remnant that are escaped of you, out of ye hands of the Kings of Asshur.

  2. And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed against the Lord God of their fathers: and therfore he made them desolate, as ye see.

  3. Be not ye now stiffenecked like your fathers, but giue the hand to the Lord, and come into his sanctuarie, which he hath sanctified for euer, and serue the Lord your God, and the fiercenesse of his wrath shall turne away from you.

  4. For if ye returne vnto the Lord, your brethren and your children shall finde mercy before them that led them captiues, and they shall returne vnto this lande: for the Lord your God is gracious and mercifull, and will not turne away his face from you, if ye conuert vnto him.

  5. So the postes went from citie to citie thorow the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, euen vnto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorne, and mocked them.

  6. But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his wordes, and misused his Prophets, vntill the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, and till there was no remedie.

  7. They say also vnto God, Depart from vs: for we desire not the knowledge of thy wayes.

  8. Who is the Almightie, that we should serue him? and what profit should we haue, if we should pray vnto him?

  9. What man is like Iob, that drinketh scornfulnesse like water?

  10. Blessed is the man that doeth not walke in the counsell of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in ye seate of the scornefull:

  11. My teares haue bin my meate day and night, while they dayly say vnto me, Where is thy God?

  12. My bones are cut asunder, while mine enemies reproch me, saying dayly vnto me, Where is thy God?

  13. And they say, Howe doeth God know it? or is there knowledge in the most High?

  14. They spake against God also, saying, Can God prepare a table in the wildernesse?

  15. Behold, he smote the rocke, that the water gushed out, and the streames ouerflowed: can hee giue bread also? or prepare flesh for his people?

  16. Because they rebelled against the wordes of the Lord, and despised the counsell of the most High,

  17. When he humbled their heart with heauines, then they fell downe and there was no helper.

  18. O ye foolish, howe long will ye loue foolishnes? and the scornefull take their pleasure in scorning, and the fooles hate knowledge?

  19. But ye haue despised all my counsell, and would none of my correction.

  20. With the scornefull he scorneth, but hee giueth grace vnto the humble.

  21. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thy selfe, and if thou be a scorner, thou alone shalt suffer.

  22. A wise sonne will obey the instruction of his father: but a scorner will heare no rebuke.

  23. A scorner seeketh wisdome, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easie to him that will vnderstande.

  24. The foole maketh a mocke of sinne: but among the righteous there is fauour.

  25. But iudgements are prepared for the scorners, and stripes for the backe of the fooles.
