  1. And when day was come, he called unto him his disciples: and he chose twelve of them (whom also he named apostles):

  2. Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

  3. Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes,

  4. And Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.

  5. Then calling together the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases.

  6. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

  7. And he said to them: Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.

  8. And whatsoever house you shall enter into, abide there and depart not from thence.

  9. And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a testimony against them.

  10. And all were astonished at the mighty power of God. But while all wondered at all the things he did, he said to his disciples: Lay you up in your hearts these words, for it shall come to pass that the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

  11. But they understood not this word: and it was hid from them, so that they perceived it not. And they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.

  12. And when his disciples, James and John, had seen this, they said: Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?

  13. And turning, he rebuked them, saying: you know not of what spirit you are.

  14. And you are they who have continued with me in my temptations:

  15. And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom;

  16. That you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom: and may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  17. But he said to them: I have meat to eat which you know not.

  18. The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat?

  19. His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

  20. But Jesus spoke of his death: and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.

  21. He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

  22. Jesus answered and said to him: What I do, thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

  23. Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet, Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.

  24. Thomas saith to him: Lord, we know not whither thou goest. And how can we know the way?

  25. Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.
