  1. When daylight came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles:

  2. Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;

  3. Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot;

  4. Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

  5. Then Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and power to cure diseases.

  6. And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

  7. “Take nothing for the journey,” He told them, “no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no second tunic.

  8. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that area.

  9. If anyone does not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that town, as a testimony against them.”

  10. “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.”

  11. But they did not understand this statement. It was veiled from them so that they could not comprehend it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.

  12. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”

  13. But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

  14. You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials.

  15. And I bestow on you a kingdom, just as My Father has bestowed one on Me,

  16. so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  17. But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”

  18. So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”

  19. His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.”

  20. They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.

  21. He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”

  22. Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

  23. “Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him. Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”

  24. “Lord,” said Thomas, “we do not know where You are going, so how can we know the way?”

  25. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
