  1. When day came, he called his talmidim and chose from among them twelve to be known as emissaries:

  2. Shim`on, whom he named Kefa; Andrew, his brother; Ya`akov; Yochanan; Philip; Bar-Talmai;

  3. Mattityahu; T'oma; Ya`akov Ben-Halfai;

  4. Shim`on, the one called the Zealot; Y'hudah Ben-Ya`akov; and Y'hudah from K'riot, who turned traitor.

  5. Calling together the Twelve, Yeshua gave them power and authority to expel all the demons and to cure diseases;

  6. and he sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal.

  7. He said to them, “Take nothing for your trip — neither a walking stick nor a pack, neither bread nor money; and don’t have two shirts.

  8. Whatever house you enter, stay there and go out from there.

  9. Wherever they don’t welcome you, shake the dust from your feet when you leave that town as a warning to them.”

  10. “Listen very carefully to what I’m going to say. The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”

  11. But they didn’t understand what he meant by this. It had been concealed from them so that they would not grasp its meaning, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

  12. When the talmidim Ya‘akov and Yochanan saw this, they said, “Sir, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to destroy them?”

  13. But he turned and rebuked them.

  14. “You are the ones who have stayed with me throughout my trials.

  15. Just as my Father gave me the right to rule, so I give you an appointment,

  16. namely, to eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom and to sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Isra’el.

  17. But he answered, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”

  18. At this, the talmidim asked one another, “Could someone have brought him food?”

  19. The talmidim said to him, “Lord, if he has gone to sleep, he will get better.”

  20. Now Yeshua had used the phrase to speak about El‘azar’s death, but they thought he had been talking literally about sleep.

  21. He came to Shim‘on Kefa, who said to him, “Lord! You are washing my feet?”

  22. Yeshua answered him, “You don’t understand yet what I am doing, but in time you will understand.”

  23. “No!” said Kefa, “You will never wash my feet!” Yeshua answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no share with me.”

  24. T’oma said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going; so how can we know the way?”

  25. Yeshua said, “I AM the Way — and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me.
