  1. You must not hold back offerings from your granaries or vats. You are to give Me the firstborn of your sons.

  3. And the LORD said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked counsel in this city.

  4. They are saying, ‘Is not the time near to build houses? The city is the cooking pot, and we are the meat.’

  5. “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by, and every vision fails’?

  6. “Son of man, take note that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many years from now; he prophesies about the distant future.’

  7. Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘None of My words will be delayed any longer. The message I speak will be fulfilled, declares the Lord GOD.’”

  8. Another of His disciples requested, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

  9. But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.’

  10. And he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.

  11. The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not anticipate.

  12. Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  13. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

  14. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.

  15. But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.

  16. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

  17. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

  18. Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.

  19. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

  20. ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

  21. But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.

  22. Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’

  23. But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’

  24. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

  25. Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
