  1. Vindicate me by Your righteousness, O LORD my God, and do not let them gloat over me.

  2. Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, just what we wanted!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up!”

  3. May those who gloat in my distress be ashamed and confounded; may those who exalt themselves over me be clothed in shame and reproach.

  8. In return for my love they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.

  10. Many a time they have persecuted me from my youth— let Israel now declare—

  11. many a time they have persecuted me from my youth, but they have not prevailed against me.

  12. The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows long.

  13. Do not gloat when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart rejoice when he stumbles,

  14. or the LORD will see and disapprove, and turn His wrath away from him.

  15. If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.

  16. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.

  17. You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘Hate your enemy.’

  18. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

  19. that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

  20. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even tax collectors do the same?

  21. And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even Gentiles do the same?

  22. Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  23. But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

  24. bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

  25. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well.
