  1. So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, that he may return to the remnant that are escaped of you out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.

  2. And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, who trespassed against Jehovah, the God of their fathers, so that he gave them up to desolation, as ye see.

  3. Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were; but yield yourselves unto Jehovah, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever, and serve Jehovah your God, that his fierce anger may turn away from you.

  4. For if ye turn again unto Jehovah, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that led them captive, and shall come again into this land: for Jehovah your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.

  5. So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.

  6. but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

  7. And they say unto God, Depart from us; For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

  8. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

  9. What man is like Job, Who drinketh up scoffing like water,

  10. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers:

  11. My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

  12. As with a sword in my bones, mine adversaries reproach me, While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

  13. And they say, How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?

  14. Yea, they spake against God; They said, Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

  15. Behold, he smote the rock, so that waters gushed out, And streams overflowed; Can he give bread also? Will he provide flesh for his people?

  16. Because they rebelled against the words of God, And contemned the counsel of the Most High:

  17. Therefore he brought down their heart with labor; They fell down, and there was none to help.

  18. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?

  19. But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof:

  20. Surely he scoffeth at the scoffers; But he giveth grace unto the lowly.

  21. If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself; And if thou scoffest, thou alone shalt bear it.

  22. A wise sonhearethhis father’s instruction; But a scoffer heareth not rebuke.

  23. A scoffer seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not; But knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.

  24. A trespass-offering mocketh fools; But among the upright there is good will.

  25. Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And stripes for the back of fools.
