  1. So the couriers went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, “You children of Israel, turn again to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, that he may return to the remnant that have escaped of you out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.

  2. Don’t be like your fathers, and like your brothers, who trespassed against the LORD, the God of their fathers, so that he gave them up to desolation, as you see.

  3. Now don’t be stiff-necked, as your fathers were; but yield yourselves to the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he has sanctified forever, and serve the LORD your God, that his fierce anger may turn away from you.

  4. For if you turn again to the LORD, your brothers and your children shall find compassion before those who led them captive, and shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him.”

  5. So the couriers passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, even to Zebulun: but they ridiculed them, and mocked them.

  6. but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, until there was no remedy.

  7. They tell God, ‘Depart from us, for we don’t want to know about your ways.

  8. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’

  9. What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

  10. Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers;

  11. My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?”

  12. As with a sword in my bones, my adversaries reproach me, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?”

  13. They say, “How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?”

  14. Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

  15. Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide flesh for his people?”

  16. because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High.

  17. Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was no one to help.

  18. “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

  19. but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;

  20. Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.

  21. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.

  22. A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, but a scoffer doesn’t listen to rebuke.

  23. A scoffer seeks wisdom, and doesn’t find it, but knowledge comes easily to a discerning person.

  24. Fools mock at making atonement for sins, but among the upright there is good will.

  25. Penalties are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the backs of fools.
