  1. And he saith, `I have been very zealous for Jehovah, God of Hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, Thine altars they have thrown down, and Thy prophets they have slain by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life--to take it.'

  2. And Jehovah saith unto him, `Go turn back on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus, and thou hast gone in, and anointed Hazael for king over Aram,

  3. and Jehu son of Nimshi thou dost anoint for king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, thou dost anoint for prophet in thy stead.

  4. `And it hath been, him who is escaped from the sword of Hazael, put to death doth Jehu, and him who is escaped from the sword of Jehu put to death doth Elisha;

  5. and I have left in Israel seven thousand, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that hath not kissed him.'

  6. And he saith, `Take the arrows,' and he taketh; and he saith to the king of Israel, `Smite to the earth;' and he smiteth three times, and stayeth.

  7. And the man of God is wroth against him, and saith, `By smiting five or six times then thou hadst smitten Aram till consuming; and now, three times thou dost smite Aram.'

  8. Lo, thou hast instructed many, And feeble hands thou makest strong.

  9. The stumbling one do thy words raise up, And bowing knees thou dost strengthen.

  10. But now, it cometh in unto thee, And thou art weary; It striketh unto thee, and thou art troubled.

  11. Is not thy reverence thy confidence? Thy hope--the perfection of thy ways?

  12. Though I had called and He answereth me, I do not believe that He giveth ear to my voice.

  13. Because with a tempest He bruiseth me, And hath multiplied my wounds for nought.

  14. He permitteth me not to refresh my spirit, But filleth me with bitter things.

  15. If of power, lo, the Strong One; And if of judgment--who doth convene me?

  16. If I be righteous, Mine mouth doth declare me wicked, Perfect I am! --it declareth me perverse.

  17. Perfect I am! --I know not my soul, I despise my life.

  18. It is the same thing, therefore I said, `The perfect and the wicked He is consuming.'

  19. If a scourge doth put to death suddenly, At the trial of the innocent He laugheth.

  20. Therefore, from His presence I am troubled, I consider, and am afraid of Him.

  21. And God hath made my heart soft, And the Mighty hath troubled me.

  22. For I have not been cut off before darkness, And before me He covered thick darkness.

  23. I cry unto Thee, And Thou dost not answer me, I have stood, and Thou dost consider me.

  24. Thou art turned to be fierce to me, With the strength of Thy hand, Thou oppressest me.

  25. What! bowest thou thyself, O my soul? Yea, art thou troubled within me? Wait for God, for still I confess Him: The salvation of my countenance--My God!
