  1. When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

  2. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

  3. Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and didn’t go fully after the LORD, as did David his father.

  7. and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he didn’t keep that which the LORD commanded.

  8. Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, “Because this is done by you, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.

  9. Notwithstanding I will not do it in your days, for David your father’s sake; but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

  10. However I will not tear away all the kingdom; but I will give one tribe to your son, for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.”

  11. “Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”

  12. The king defiled the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mountain of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon.

  13. and Yochanan became the father of Azariah, (he it is who executed the priest’s office in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem),

  14. It shall happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who shall be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

  15. He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.

  16. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you;

  17. but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever. His throne shall be established forever.”’”

  18. Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

  19. He said to me, ‘Solomon, your son, shall build my house and my courts; for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

  20. I will establish his kingdom forever, if he continues to do my commandments and my ordinances, as at this day.’

  21. and ate and drink before the LORD on that day with great gladness. They made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him to the LORD to be prince, and Zadok to be priest.

  22. All the princes, the mighty men, and also all of the sons of king David submitted themselves to Solomon the king.

  23. The LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

  24. In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.”

  25. Solomon said to God, “You have shown great loving kindness to David my father, and have made me king in his place.
