  1. And when he was now old, his heart was turned away by women to follow strange gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his father.

  2. But Solomon worshipped Astarthe, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Moloch, the idol of the Ammonites.

  3. And Solomon did that which was not pleasing before the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as David, his father.

  7. And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not follow strange gods: but he kept not the things which the Lord commanded him.

  8. The Lord therefore said to Solomon: Because thou hast done this, and hast not kept my covenant, and my precepts, which I have commanded thee, I will divide and rend thy kingdom, and will give it to thy servant.

  9. Nevertheless, in thy days I will not do it, for David thy father's sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.

  10. Neither will I take away the whole kingdom; but I will give one tribe to thy son, for the sake of David, my servant, and Jerusalem, which I have chosen.

  11. Thy father laid a grievous yoke upon us: now, therefore, do thou take off a little of the grievous service of thy father, and of his most heavy yoke, which he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

  12. The high places also that were at Jerusalem, on the right side of the Mount of Offence, which Solomon, king of Israel, had built to Astaroth, the idol of the Sidonians, and to Chamos, the scandal of Moab, and to Melchom, the abomination of the children of Ammon, the king defiled.

  13. Johanan begot Azarias. This is he that executed the priestly office in the house which Solomon built in Jerusalem.

  14. And when thou shalt have ended thy days to go to thy fathers, I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons: and I will establish his kingdom.

  15. He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever.

  16. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee.

  17. But I will settle him in my house, and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be most firm for ever.

  18. David being old and full of days, made Solomon his son king over Israel.

  19. And he said to me: Solomon thy son shall build my house, and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be a father to him.

  20. And I will establish his kingdom for ever, it he continue to keep my commandments, and my judgments, as at this day.

  21. And they ate, and drank before the Lord that day with great joy. And they anointed the second time Solomon the son of David. And they anointed him to the Lord to be prince, and Sadoc to be high priest.

  22. And all the princes, and men of power, and all the sons of king David gave their hand, and were subject to Solomon the king.

  23. And the Lord magnified Solomon over all Israel: and gave him the glory of a reign, such as no king of Israel had before him.

  24. And behold that night God appeared to him, saying: Ask what thou wilt that I should give thee.

  25. And Solomon said to God: Thou hast shewn great kindness to my father David: and hast made me king in his stead.
