When Yochanan’s messengers had departed, he began to tell the multitudes about Yochanan, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

“For I tell you, among those who are born of women there is not a greater prophet than Yochanan the Immerser, yet he who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.”

When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been immersed with Yochanan’s immersion.

For Yochanan the Immerser came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that Yochanan had risen from the dead,

Herod said, “Yochanan I beheaded, but who is this, about whom I hear such things?” He sought to see him.

They answered, “‘Yochanan the Immerser,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again.”

When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as Yochanan also taught his disciples.”

The Torah and the Prophets were until Yochanan. From that time the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.

But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that Yochanan was a prophet.”

There came a man, sent from God, whose name was Yochanan.

Yochanan testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’”

This is Yochanan’s testimony, when the Judeans sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

Yochanan answered them, “I immerse in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know.

These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Yochanan was immersing.

The next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Yochanan testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.

Again, the next day, Yochanan was standing with two of his disciples,

One of the two who heard Yochanan, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

Yochanan also was immersing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were immersed.

For Yochanan was not yet thrown into prison.

There arose therefore a questioning on the part of Yochanan’s disciples with some Judeans about purification.

They came to Yochanan, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, the same immerses, and everyone is coming to him.”

Yochanan answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.
