  1. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisheva.

  2. Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

  3. But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elisheva, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Yochanan.

  5. The people were waiting for Zechariah, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.

  6. and entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elisheva.

  7. On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zechariah, after the name of the father.

  8. His father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

  9. in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to Yochanan, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.
