  1. ¶ Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

  2. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

  3. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

  4. ¶ And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

  5. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

  6. But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:

  7. But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.

  8. ¶ And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

  9. ¶ Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

  10. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

  11. Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

  12. Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

  13. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

  14. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

  15. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

  16. And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

  17. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

  18. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

  19. ¶ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

  20. The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?

  21. ¶ Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.

  22. ¶ And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

  23. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

  24. ¶ Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

  25. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
