  1. Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

  2. ¶ The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.

  3. A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.

  4. Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

  5. My heart panted, fearfulness affrighted me: the night of my pleasure hath he turned into fear unto me.

  6. Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield.

  7. For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth.

  8. And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:

  9. And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:

  10. And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.

  11. O my threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

  12. ¶ The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

  13. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

  14. And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

  15. For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:

  16. And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.

  17. But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.

  18. Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of his temple.

  19. Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.

  20. O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.

  21. The LORD of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.

  22. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.

  23. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

  24. Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

  25. They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
